Today I was met with a letter from Finland. I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I feel a sense of abhorrence towards the government for our mandatory National Service which has closed so many avenues for me recently. But God has been immensely gracious in me staying in Singapore. For example, NS has definitely made me a more responsible man. Also, I’ve met individuals I wouldn’t have if I had been in Melbourne. So there’s always reason to give thanks.
I am leaning towards going overseas. But there are so many factors to consider. The scholarships usually contribute solely towards tuition fees. Maintenance is another problem, though I have saved up considerably in the last year and a half. Another thing is family. This is a much more pressing issue. Dad’s not going to last more in the working industry. This means no more money. No money no study, simple. But M hasn’t had her education yet. If she does decide to medicine, it will be 5 years. JI has decided to pursue a phD in research. She will be on scholarship too. But if in UK, the living cost, rent etc. would prove too high. Then that leaves me???
Suddenly, I feel so irresponsible for spending so much on my Corinthian figure collection. Ultimately, my gf/wife would probably throw out my figures after realizing how much I’ve spent on them. The amount of tears Mum and Dad have shed for me is unquantifiable. Despite all my attempts to be a good son, I’ve failed miserably in so many aspects. I hold my head up high, but honestly, what’s there to be proud about?
Anyway, here’s the letter I received. I have NO IDEA how to answer questions 1 and 3.
Dear Jonathan,
We have considered your proposal for a scholarship and would like to invite you to our office for an interview.
A few questions we hope to address.
1. How will you resolve the situation with National Service as you mentioned?
2. Can you show us evidence of your financial capability? The scholarship only covers tuition fees and bare survival costs. Students cannot be granted working visa here.
3. We notice you are already covered by a scholarship. Why would you require another scholarship? These are scarce and the places are highly coveted.
Tentatively, the interview will be at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Please call for confirmation or if you require a different date. Please bring along your portfolio encompassing previous design projects and work experience.
We hope to hear from you soon.
Best regards,
J Savolainen
